Welcome back to our second edition of ‘Coming up this week’! There’s an awful lot going on this week from careers events, seminars and forums and the first speakers event from our beloved CUGS! The Politics of Bread in the Middle East; Thursday 23rd January 2020; 18:00 – 19:30:

About this event: A talk from Dr. José Ciro Martinez, a Research Fellow at Trinity College whose work focuses on the politics of food, contention, and state formation in the Modern Middle East. There will be a short drinks reception (bread included!) prior to Dr. Martinez’s talk, which will be followed by a Q&A.

About the event: This talk by Ian Bruff (University of Manchester) makes the case against the widespread assumption that neoliberalism is, even if rather different in practice, a worldview that is fundamentally about the valorisation of free markets.The talk relates to an ongoing book project.

About the event: The connection between decolonisation and global intellectual history is not a straightforward one. The ‘global’ in global intellectual history resonates with the calls to decolonise scholarship: by decentering Europe as the source of epistemological innovation and treating the postcolonial world as sites of theoretical originality. This forum will discuss how global intellectual history and decolonizing can support each other moving forward.
